i love the Link-2 one, siouxzie! the balance is great. i love that the camera focus is on the person sitting in the foreground, but because the light focus is on the person standing in the background, i am still drawn to look over there too. the contrast between dark and light throughout is great. well done. also...those guys are all wearing povertees...so... that's awesome.
Thanks for the feedback Amy! Coincidentally I think that is also my favorite of the group.
Hope all is going well,
Niall
4, 3 and 2 look pretty good to me. 2 is the best mostly because of the composition and exposure. On a wider shot like 4 there's a lot of empty space because of the lower exposure. A longer exposure (or increased ISO) would help bring out some of the details my eyes are hunting for even at the risk of blowing out some highlights. On 2 you can afford to underexpose because the subject is more prominent.
Is the ISO 200 reading in the EXIF data for the shots right? Don't be afraid to bump that up in available/low light situations.
All of those that I posted were at ISO 200 because I used flash on most of them. It doesn't read that fired flash because I'm using a Nikon SB-28. On 2 I had to up the exposure a half stop in post production because it was really underexposed, I also muted the colors because after upping the exposure all of the reds were completely blown out.
A lot of last night was an experiment with taking lower light photos without a really high ISO. I feel like I've been relying on my high ISOs to much and many of my pictures lately have come out grainy.
Shots 4 and 5 were taken using a shutter speed of about one half of a second to try and get some light and clarity in without the ISO.
Gotcha. Be careful with flash during performances (especially in a darkened venue), it can be distracting if you are taking more than an occasional shot.
Even if I'm using flash I don't hesitate to bump my ISO to 400 or 800. A higher ISO will reduce the flash output you need and it will let some more ambient in. It's all just one big aperture/shutter/iso/ambient/flash balancing act, do whatever gets the results you want.
And that reminds me I've got light painting pics to post.
