I don't think they're that bad for just figuring out how to use everything and messing around the house. Ya know?

Crank your color saturation; you'll get more pictures that "pop". Sadly my D70 only has an "Enhanced" setting, but I'm pretty sure the 40D has 3 or 4 saturation steps. I've never taken a picture and wished it had less saturated colors.
And watch when your flash is popping up (on AUTO it will do so whenever it thinks there isn't enough light). It fired on the pic of your car when it didn't really need to and washed out the license plate.

My next purchase is definitely a hot shoe flash because the pop up flashes on these cameras are unruly.
And thanks for the saturation tip... I now just need to figure out how to change it!
